Het boek telt acht hoofdstukken waarin de karper met zijn gedrag centraal staat, dit alles in samenhang met de altijd veranderende onderwatersituatie. Het boek vertelt je ook waarom wij als vissers soms de haren uit ons hoofd trekken. De twee hoofdstukken over aas zijn diepgravend, relativerend en tonen aan dat er veel onzin over dit onderwerp bestaat. En waarom.

Als kers op de taart zijn een aantal verhalen opgenomen die laten zien dat Rob niet alleen visser en schilder is, maar ook nog een begaafd meester-verteller.
