The Soviet KV-2 was a heavy assault tank developed in 1940, built on the chassis of the KV-1 but armed with a massive 152 mm howitzer mounted in a tall, boxy turret. It was designed to smash through fortified positions, bunkers, and enemy strong points rather than fight enemy tanks directly. Early in World War II, during the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the KV-2’s thick armor made it nearly invulnerable to most German anti-tank weapons. However, its size, slow speed, mechanical unreliability, and cumbersome turret limited its effectiveness in mobile warfare. While it achieved some legendary defensive actions—sometimes holding up entire German units—its production was quickly abandoned in favor of more versatile designs like the T-34 and KV-1. The KV-2 remains iconic as one of the most formidable but impractical tanks of the early war.
